What's an international yacht race without an international entry?

We have received an entry from Ion, a Beneteau 43 hailing from Nanaimo, British Columbia. This boat has completed the Van Isle 360 twice. This will be skipper Bill Jones' first time racing the Oregon Offshore. The boat rates 111.

2013 Oregon Offshore Update

Good day folks! As we head at a blistering pace through April, the board of CYC-Portland has been checking things off our to-do list, and getting geared up to host the 37th Annual Oregon Offshore!

Here are a few details about our progress thus far:

We have had great financial support from our community of sponsors, and have a lot of exciting products to raffle. You can find all of our current sponsors on the blog. Click on any one to be redirected to their respective websites. Make sure to mention to our supporters that you're a fan of the Oregon Offshore!

We continue to look for more support throughout our community. To inquire about making product or cash donations, please contact Jerry Barnes.

We are fortunate to have Eric Rouzee driving our new graphics and branding. He has designed the logo, shown below, for the 2013 Oregon Offshore SWAG. Shirts will be available for purchase at the Kick-Off party in Portland, the Skippers’ Meeting in Astoria, as well as at the finish in Victoria. We'll have two cotton styles and one synthetic to choose from.

Be sure to come with cash or check for all t-shirt purchases! They make perfect crew and/or skipper gifts.

The board is also incredibly lucky to have the help and support of Dayna Christian of Immix Law Group! She has helped us make much needed updates to our race packet and has been an incredible resource over the past several weeks.  We look forward to her continued support of CYC beyond the Oregon Offshore.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Kick-Off Party; Monday April 22nd at 6:30pm at the traditional location: Kells Irish Pub located in Downtown Portland at 112 SW 2nd Ave, Portland, OR 97204. Drinks, Dinner, and Raffle tickets will all be available for purchase!

Another Cruising Class Entry

We received an entry today from CYC member Duane Webb, of Portland, OR, for his first Oregon Offshore race. Rose Petals is a Catalina 34 with a PHRF rating of 174. Rose Petals is the second boat entered in this year's Cruising Class.

Only 10 more days to get your entry in!

Our latest entry is from Portlander Phil Lewis. 2013 is Phil's first year racing in the Oregon Offshore, and he'll be in the cruising class with his Cal 34, Souffle.

Thanks to our volunteers for a successful Going North Seminar!

CYC-Portland just hosted its 3rd annual “Going North” seminar. The event was well-attended, with approximately 50 racers and cruisers on hand.

Steve Rander of Schooner Creek Boat Works kicked off the evening with an informative presentation on how he approaches preparing his yacht for offshore passages. Frank Colistro followed with a race strategy session for Oregon Offshore competitors (much of the content reflects Timm Lessley’s strategy for California Girl, so it’s worth studying!). The event concluded with a cruiser's view of the Salish Sea. Eric Rouzee shared some of his favorite cruising grounds in the region with a picture tour, and these hidden gems will now be a little more popular for it.

Special thanks to Eric Hopper and West Coast Event Productions / Pure Space for providing the venue!

You can download the presentations for boat prep and race strategy here.

Curious about the fleet?

We've begun adding images of each boat who's entered. You can view a photo of each boat (where available) by clicking on the boat name under "2013 Entrants" in the left column.

Blade Runner makes twelve...

Our latest entry has arrived from Bellingham, WA. Blade Runner, a pretty red Santa Cruz 27, has a PHRF rating of 159, and this will be skipper Ward Naviaux's first Oregon Offshore.

Keep 'em coming!

Race Trackers

Back by popular demand, competing boats will be provided with SPOT trackers again this year. If you’re a fan of ocean sailboat racing, come back on the 9th of May to watch the race unfold live here. For now, you can watch a replay of last year’s race.

It's true...

Aja's entry has arrived! She's an Ericson 35-2 skippered by Rich Elstrom, out of Astoria, OR. PHRF 150.

We've heard quite a few rumors of other boats planning to enter. If they're all true, this will prove to be one of the biggest years yet for Oregon Offshore.

Updates to Oregon Offshore Race Packet

The 2013 Oregon Offshore Race Packet has been amended, and you can access the new version through the link on the left of this page. Two significant changes were made:

Meeting a manufacturer's requirements for life raft certification is not sufficient if the certification does not also meet PIYA standards. PIYA requires that life rafts have been certified more recently than May 12, 2011 for this year's race.

We've also changed the contact phone number for the finish line. Please make a note of the new number.

Peregrine is back!

We received an entry from Steve Smolinske of Bellevue, WA with his Catalina 38, Peregrine. She rates 123 and has run this race multiple times.

The fleet has now grown to ten boats!

Check your passports!

Skippers and crew, be sure to check your passports. They take 4-6 weeks for processing, and you'll need them to get into Canada at the end of the race. The start is only 49 days away!

Three more boats have joined the fleet

We have received entries from three more boats, all owned by CYC members:
  • Rage, a Wylie 70 owned by Nancy and Steve Rander with a PHRF rating of -69;
  • Riva, a J-46 owned by Scott Campbell with a PHRF rating of 45;
  • and Bum's Rush, a Cascade 36 owned by Mark McCuddy

Bum's Rush rates 183 and was the race winner in 2011. We're glad to have her back!

Two more new entries (and a rumor of a third)

CYC member Doug Schenk has entered his J105, Free Bowl of Soup. Doug has run this race multiple times and we are looking forward to seeing him again.
Another CYC member, Tom Kelly has entered Anam Cara, a J-122. Anam Cara is a successful racer (she won the Swiftsure two years ago).

Rumor has it that we should also see an entry from Astoria Yacht Club from Rich Elstrom and his boat Aja. Aja had mechanical difficulties last year, but everything is repaired and they are looking forward to the race.

Two more new entries for the 2013 race

Pete Shainin, hailing from Anacortes, WA has once again entered his Steven 47 Passepartout. Passepartout has run a number of Offshores and is always competitive.

Portlander and CYC member Eric Collins has entered his Santa Cruz 27 Kokopelli. Kokopelli is also a perennial racer in the Offshore. It's great to see her back.

Entries for the 2013 Offshore have started to arrive

We have our first two entries for the 2013 Oregon Offshore.

The first entry to arrive is from Frank Colistro with his Cascade 36 Wy'East. Frank is a long time offshore racer and will also be serving as our safety boat for the second year.

Our second entry comes from Tom Keffer with his J-42 Velocity. Tom is from Hood River.

West Marine Night

We've set a date for West Marine Night. Offshore racers, crew and friends are all invited to West Marine, 1176 N Hayden Meadows Dr., Portland, on Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. They will have special event pricing for many items. The event pricing will extend to special orders that are made that night for things not in stock.

Dave Perry coming to Portland for a Rules & Tactics Seminar

Dave is coming to Portland for a North U Rules & Tactics Seminar on February 23, 2013. This seminar includes a Friday night mock protest hearing and an all day seminar on Saturday. It will be held at the

Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel
8235 NE Airport Way
Portland, OR  97220

OCSA is subsidizing the cost of this seminar, making the fees very affordable. Registration for the seminar can be found here: Dave Perry Seminar Registration.

US Sailing members also get a discount, so now might be the time to join US Sailing - you will get a copy of the new Racing Rules of Sailing when you join US Sailing.

Cruise Ships

Offshore weekend will be busy at both the Ports of Victoria and Astoria. May is when the cruise lines reposition their ships from cruising sunny Mexico and the Carribean and head for summer cruising in Alaska. There are two cruise ships, the Norwegian Pearl and the Norwegian Sun, who will be going up the coast from Astoria to Victoria. The Norwegian Pearl will arrive in Victoria on Friday at 0800 hours and leave at 1700 hours, the Norwegian Sun arrives on Saturday at 0800 hours, leaving at 1700 hours.

There are also two ships heading to Victoria from San Diego. The Westerdam arrives on Thursday at 1700 hours and leaves at 2200 hours. The Zuiderdam arrives on Friday at 1400 hours, leaving at 2300 hours. Many racers will see these ships offshore - some may see them up close, since some of the scheduled departures are at times when racers are likely to be arriving in Victoria (the fast ones anyway).

Saturday will be a busy day at the cruise ship docks, with both ships and Offshore racers arriving. The Oosterdam arrives at 1800 and leaves at 2359, just in time for racers to be finishing.
