NORPAC makes for fun, laid-back summer racing

Hello Offshore racers!

We wanted to give a shout out to the NORPAC Regatta, held July 13 - 18 in Barkley Sound. If you're leaving your boat in Canada after the race for some summer cruising, consider this fun, low-key cruiser/racer style regatta that's great for short-handed boats. No flying sails, limited entries accepted. Find more info here.

Welcome back, Peregrine!

Steve Smolinske of Bellevue, WA, has again entered his Catalina 38, Peregrine. She rates 123, and Steve says she loves to go to weather.

Last year, she was unable to race due to inclement weather during the delivery to Astoria, so we're thrilled to see her back. This will be the boat's third Oregon Offshore.

The Cruising Class has Arisen

Oregon Offshore has received its first entry for this year's cruising class. Gil MacGregor or Portland, Oregon, will race his Cascade 36, Child of the Mist.

Most years, Gil crews on Velocity with Tom Keffer, but this year has decided to race his own boat. He has plenty of blue water sailing experience after sailing a 38-foot Choy Lee to Hawai'i, and multiple other trips to Port Angeles.

Send in your cruising class (or PHRF class) entries so Gil can have some competition!

Turnagain - Beneteau Oceanis 50

Turnagain is a Beneteau Oceanis 50 hailing from Vancouver, BC, and skippered by Travis McGregor. The boat's PHRF rating has been revised this year to 99.

Kinetic - Beneteau First 47.7

Kinetic is a Beneteau First 47.7, sailing for the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and skippered by David Sutcliffe. On boats named Kinetic, David has done four Vic-Maui races, three Van Isle 360’s and many local races. Following the 2006 Vic-Maui race, Kinetic sailed onward to Australia, competed in the 2006 Sydney Hobart race and then sailed home, a round trip of over 17,000 nautical miles.

Preparing for the 2014 Vic-Maui, Kinetic plans to sail in the Southern Straits, Oregon Offshore, and Swiftsure races.

Two Beneteaus from Canada will race

We've received two entries from Vancouver, BC. The first is Kinetic, a Beneteau First 47.7 skippered by David Sutcliffe. She has a PHRF rating of 27. David has sailed this boat in the Sydney Hobart race, as well as racing Vic-Maui in 2006, and then sailing home... totaling 17,000 round trip.

The second is Turnagain, a Beneteau Oceanis 50, rating 99. Travis McGregor will skipper this beautiful boat in the Oregon Offshore for the second year in a row.

Both boats are preparing for the 2014 Vic-Maui race.

Velocity's Entry Has Arrived

We've received our third entry this year from Hood River, OR's Offshore veteran Tom Keffer. Tom will race Velocity, a his J42, which has a newly minted PHRF rating of 72.

We're told that although the crew is not a fan, this boat loves heavy wind on the nose. It's a great quality to have for the Oregon Offshore.

Notice: 2014 SERs vary from PIYA's categories

Oregon Offshore skippers!

We've heard there is a little confusion regarding which PIYA safety requirements are being used for the race this year... The Oregon Offshore Race Committee has published Safety Equipment Requirements (SERs) specific to this year's race.

They are similar to PIYA's new Coastal+ category, but with many differences. Please be sure to download the SERs specific to the Oregon Offshore early enough to be prepared for the race this May.

You can download the Oregon Offshore SERs by clicking on the link that reads "Safety Equipment Requirements" at the top left of this screen. As always, feel free to email the race committee or the Oregon Offshore Google Group for more information.

Two boats makes a race!

Our second entry arrived today from Pete Shainin, veteran Oregon Offshore racer and owner of Passepartout. She is a Stevens 47 with a PHRF rating of 115.

Passepartout hails from Mt. Vernon, Washington.

The First 2014 Entry Has Arrived

We've received our first entry for the 2014 Oregon Offshore Race! Frank Colistro has entered his Cascade 36, Wy'East, to race with a PHRF rating of 153.

Frank currently holds the record for the number of Oregon Offshore races complete, at 19 races. Wy'East hails from beautiful Portland, Oregon.

Give Frank a run for his money. Send in your entry today! The Race Packet is available for download by clicking the link in the upper left corner of your screen.

Last chance for Safety at Sea in the Pacific NW before Oregon Offshore!

The Sailing Foundation will be hosting a 1, 2 and 3-day Safety at Sea Seminar on Bainbridge Island, February 22-24.  The full seminar costs $335/person, and will provide you with the hands on skills to keep yourself alive. For complete details on the agenda and pricing, visit The Sailing Foundation's website.

If you would like to join the group traveling from Portland to Bainbridge, call Darroch Cahen at (971) 295-7070, or by e-mail at darroch at frye dot com.

CYC strongly recommends that at least two crew on each boat racing the Oregon Offshore attend one of these seminars or its equivalent. Next year this recommendation will become a requirement, so you might as well get your crew qualified now!

Big boat pictures from this year's hospitality crew

Lisa Springfield, Darcy Vershoor, and Ben Powers of this year's Oregon Offshore hospitality crew were kind enough to send us these pictures of Neptune's Car and Rage upon their arrivals in Victoria.

CYC would like to thank these folks, on behalf of all our racers, for their hard work at the docks in Victoria. We got fantastic feedback about their efforts and the great welcome they gave each boat.

We'd also like to thank Carolyn Martin for her help with fundraising, Kathy Kershner for her help organizing at various race events, and Emily Shea for putting in a ton of effort and putting up with Ryan for three days at the finish line. We can't do it without volunteers like them.

For the rest of the finish line pictures, follow the links from our previous post. You can also still buy 2013 merchandise here.
