Entry: Desperado, New York 36

Jerry Barnes has been an active part of the Oregon Offshore Race for years, both behind the scenes and on the water. This year Jerry has decided to go all in with his New York 36, Desperado. She last raced the OOR in 2013 with a memorable photo finish, 14 seconds between the second, third and fourth place boats in the fleet! Welcome back! Hope you have a WHALE of a good time

Double Hand, Swiftsure 2013

Entry: Rage, Wylie 70

Skipper David Raney did not disappoint again this year. He and the Rage crew will represent Portland in hopes to keep the legacy going strong. Rage, Wylie 70, was First to Finish and First in Class in the 2016 race and has previously snagged their fair share of victories before that. Rage will race Swiftsure then begin the rigorous preparations for Pac Cup 2018. PHRF -63

Entry Escape Artist, J/105

Looks like we're gonna have ourselves some friendly J/105 competition this year. First time participant, Escape Artist, skippered by Dana Sibilla, is the "youngest" of the four Portland based J/105 One Design teams. While this is the first Oregon Offshore for the boat, the combined experience of the crew will bring some stiff competition on the race course. Once in Victoria, Escape Artist will stay for Swiftsure then plans to make her way over for Whidbey Island Race Week for a second year.

 PHRF rating 93

Entry from Stay Gold, Morgan 36T

Always great to welcome new boat participants! Hailing from Gig Harbor, WA, Team Stay Gold, with skipper Brian Bugge, is an average group of sailors bound by their limitless passion for the sea. With a spirit of never-say-die, they'll stay gold until the end- no matter what comes their way. The plan is to continue on to Swiftsure before heading over to Her new permanent home, Hawaii. Good luck to you! PHRF rating 126

Entry received for Velocity

Although skipper, Tom Keffer, took last year off to race the Pac Cup, he still helped us out on the start boat and for that we are grateful! That being said, we certainly are glad to have him back on the racing side of things this year. Velocity, J/42, is no stranger to the OOR. With a PHRF rating of 72, she is sure to keep things interesting!

Congratulations to David et al for a record setting Vic Maui win last year. We are honored to have you back and hope to offer some serious competition.

Panama Red, Mumm 36

Glad to see Chris Schweiger and Jeff McDonald have decided to race Panama Red, their Mumm 36, yet again this year. Third to Finish in the 2016 race shows these guys mean business, regardless of rumors of a resident disco light on board. This Portland based boat has a PHRF rating of 51.

Happy Ending For Panama Red on the 2016 CYC Oregon Offshore!

The crew on Panama Red gets a special award for spreading international love and happiness during the 2016 CYC Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race! For those who don't know, they were instrumental in a very romantic proposal after the race... Who doesn't love a happy ending? Here are some pics courtesy of JT...

Let's not forget our master-blogger, keeping you all informed and entertained... Flamingo Chris Christensen from Portland, OR. Well done and a million thanks, Chris.

CYC Portland couldn't run this event without the help of dozens of volunteers, and I am sure I am missing tons of names! Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this thing a huge success for the last 40 years! Here's to another 40...

David v. Goliath - Blade Runner & Raindrop

Yet another classic "race within a race" on this year's CYC Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race was the competition in B fleet between the Santa Cruz 27 Blade Runner, and the Cascade 36, Raindrop.

From a design perspective, you really couldn't find two more divergent boats...one built strong and steady for solid performance in NW waters, and the other, an ultra-light "mini sled" designed by one of the greatest "wizards" in the history of modern racing yacht design, Bill Lee.

This isolated competition was interesting from a number of perspectives...the end result - as most now know - is that Raindrop finished ahead of Blade Runner, but Blade Runner saved their time on Raindrop after the time allowances were calculated.

Blade Runner won this year's race - first overall in Class B & First Overall in PHRF; Raindrop was 2nd in Class B & 2nd Overall in PHRF.

It was a great race, so we thought we'd isolate the tracks of these two boats to compare courses.

Note that early in the race Raindrop broke right, and established an early lead....after that, Blade Runner spent much of the next two days following in Raindrop's wake....but just close enough behind to save their time!

Great racing! Here's the Race Tracker:

Battle of the Cascades

The 2016 CYC Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race featured three classic Cascade 36 sailboats, Raindrop, Bum's Rush & Wy'East.
Although sailing in different classes due to rating considerations, no doubt these three boats were keeping a close eye on each other (as we were), and having their own "race within a race" for Cascade 36 line honors. The winner of this year's "Cascade Cup" (I made that up) was Raindrop, finishing first in Class B & 7th Overall; they corrected out to 2nd in Class B behind Blade Runner and placed 2nd Overall in the PHRF fleet.
Check out the video of the Race Tracker following the three Cascade 36's up the course to the finish.
Note: Wy'East had some early transponder difficulties and were not reporting accurate positions early in the race....they didn't get a head start!

Class A2 Battle To The Finish! - The Race Tracker

There were lots of "races within the race" in this year's 2016 Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race, like this one between class A2 leaders Time Bandit, Panama Red, Anam Cara & Free Bowl of Soup. Watch the Soup "heat up" at the end of this track, just before the finish!
